SketchUp Stuttered When I Used the Orbit Tool

Notes

This is one troubleshooting experience, not evidence that every SketchUp performance problem is caused by an NVIDIA driver branch. Before changing drivers, note the version you have and make sure you can roll back. NVIDIA positions Studio and Game Ready drivers for different use cases; check its current guidance when choosing one.

During a class, I noticed severe stuttering in SketchUp on my laptop when I dragged the Orbit tool (the tool that changes the view when you hold the middle mouse button). The interface stopped responding for several seconds at a time, making the application unusable.

I first ruled out a general hardware-performance issue: I had been playing Hearts of Iron IV during the lecture, and it was running smoothly. A blank SketchUp project also seemed unaffected, so I tried assigning SketchUp to the discrete GPU. That did not help. I then disabled extensions I rarely used, with no improvement.

I found a SketchUp forum discussion about pan/orbit stutter. My NVIDIA Studio driver was already current, but another user had resolved a similar problem by installing a newer driver. I switched to the Game Ready branch and reopened SketchUp; the stutter was gone.

That solved my case, but it does not mean Game Ready is generally better for SketchUp. NVIDIA describes Studio drivers as focused on creative applications and stability testing, while Game Ready drivers follow game releases. If you test a different branch, use NVIDIA’s current driver downloads, change one thing at a time, and keep a rollback path.
